SALT LAKE CITY –- (May 18, 2009) – From more than 7,000 eligible teachers, in the U.S. and Canada, one Utah elementary school educator, Cindy McCaw, has been named a recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award, according to Salt Lake Junior Academy principal Trevor Kendall.

Ms. McCaw, who has taught at Salt Lake Junior Academy for the past 11 years, is one of 12 recipients of the award which is given annually by the Alumni Awards Foundation, an independent organization that supports Seventh-day Adventist schools, said Mr. Kendall. Six awards are given to elementary school teachers and six to high school teachers.

"Teachers are no doubt some of the hardest working professionals in the workforce,” said Bob Summerour, Alumni Awards Foundation Board Chairman. “Ms. McCaw's commitment to changing lives has not only stood the test of time but also has inspired both peers and students to reach their full potential."

The award will be presented Thursday evening (May 21) in an end-of –the-year school ceremony at Salt Lake Junior Academy from 6 – 9 p.m. Ms. McCaw will receive a $1,000 grant and a medal presented by Anita Molstead, superintendent of education for the Nevada- Utah conference of Adventist education.

A veteran educator for the past 28 years, during the 2008 – 2009 academic calendar, Ms. McCaw taught grades four through six. She was nominated by Mr.Kendall and her peers at the school.

“I have been in a perpetual state of amazement at Cindy McCaw’s demonstration of dedication, passion for her students’ development, and her heart-capturing creativity.  She effortlessly draws enviable levels of respect and focus from her students,” said Mr. Kendall.

The criteria for the Excellence in Teaching Award are:

  • Innovative educational practice
  • High spiritual and academic standards
  • Recognized and recommended by peers, administrators and parents as a role model for students and for other teachers
  • Consistently demonstrated love for God, love for students, and a passion for excellence

Last year, Salt Lake Junior Academy ranked 13TH in the State of Utah for its elementary academics. The school has been serving the Wasatch community since the 1920s.  Its philosophy is that all children have the potential to be great, regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status.  Through keeping tuition low and by offering financial assistance, it provides the benefits of a private school education at a more affordable price.
